პროექტის აღწერა : a. Background The proposed research into Electromagnetic forward and inverse modeling approaches that is based on the Method of auxiliary sources, is aimed at developing efficient methodologies to enhance detection and discrimination of subsurface objects. The detecting and discriminating subsurface objects such as landmines and unexploded ordnances (UXO) problems are one of most pressing environmental problem around the world. This is very well-defined issue not only for Georgia, (Note: in last decade several ethnic conflicts took place in Georgia) it is a huge and urgent problem in the USA as well. The prohibited costs of excavating all geophysical anomalies are well known and are one of the greatest impediments to efficient clean-up of land mines and UXO contaminated lands for civilian use. The problem is much complicated when object is placed in geological hostile medium. Therefore, this proposal studies the effects of geological interference on subsurface objects discrimination procedures through a new and innovative discrimination technology to understand and substantially reduce the impact of geological effects on EM data collected by magnetic and electromagnetic (EMI) sensors. b. Objective The objective of the proposed work is to extend the Method of auxiliary sources to understand geological interference on EM sensors and to develop a new robust numerical approaches and techniques for inverting a buried object’s and it’s surrounding soil’s EM parameters simultaneously. Specific technical objectives are to: 1. Investigate and document the geological interference effects of EM sensors. 2. Develop and implement inversion routines for MAS technique for inversion of electromagnetic data (time, frequency domain, single loop, multi-loop, gradient, B-field, etc.) or magnetic data (vector, total-field, gradient etc.) 3. Develop a new, MAS based EM data inversion routings for inverting the soil’s and the object electromagnetic parameters simultaneously, assuming the object and background contribute additively to the measured signal c. Benefits This research will investigate and document how the geological soil affects on the EM sensors performances’, and will provide tools that will improve upon the existing capabilities of reliably detecting and discriminating subsurface objects. d. Transition Plan Transition plan for the proposed will be technical publications and presentations, and a final outcome of this proposal will be a software package for advanced inversion and modeling algorithms for EM data that will be available to the wider EM community.
